Designing Your Fence? Don’t Forget the Gate and Driveway Entrance

When planning the layout of your property’s fencing, it’s also important to consider what type of gate and driveway entrance you’ll be using. Ideally, your fence manufacturer should offer a full range of compatible gate options. Even better if they provide a complete system that ensures both aesthetic consistency and smooth installation.

Depending on your needs and the available space, you can choose from several types of gates, including:

  • Sliding driveway gates – available in two versions: self-supporting or track-based systems.

  • Double-leaf swing gates – a great alternative when sliding gates aren’t possible due to site conditions.

Tradition or Technology?

Manually operated gates are the simplest and most reliable solution — especially because of their minimal mechanical complexity. However, anyone who has ever used an automated gate will immediately notice the difference in comfort.

Automatic systems save you from having to leave your car in order to open or close the gate. That’s not just convenient — it also helps avoid exposure to rain, snow, or freezing winds.

If your budget allows and you have electrical infrastructure near the gate, this is definitely the recommended option.

Matching the Gate to the Fence

It’s important to match the style and structure of the gate to your fencing. For example, installing a heavy-duty gate alongside lightweight panel fencing might look unbalanced or out of place.

The surroundings matter too. If your panel fencing is accompanied by dense greenery — like a hedge or conifers — there may be no room for a sliding gate. In such cases, a double-leaf swing gate will be the better solution.

You should also check the distance between the outermost fence posts:

  • If it’s under 10 meters, both sliding and double-leaf gates are viable.
But keep in mind — each wing of a 10-meter double-leaf gate would be 5 meters long, which may not be practical for daily use.

  • If the distance exceeds 10 meters, a sliding gate is the only sensible choice, as these can span up to 12 meters.

A Gate Should Be Practical — but Also Aesthetic

Lastly, remember that a gate isn’t just a functional feature — it’s also one of the most visible elements of your property’s exterior. Make sure your choice is not only technically sound but also visually appealing.
